The Philippine Jesuits are joining forces with massive relief efforts to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda), the most powerful typhoon ever recorded in the Philippines. The scale of desperation and devastation is immense.

The Jesuit social arm, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), is coordinating all efforts of the Jesuit province to assist victims of Yolanda. A SLB team sailed on 12 November on a navy boat for the devastated areas of Leyte and Samar together with a Caritas Manila team and many supplies.

Yolanda laid waste to entire cities and towns. Over 10,000 people lost their lives. Some 2,900,000 families have been affected, some 24,000 houses damaged and major infrastructures devastated.

Philippine Jesuit Provincial, Fr Antonio Moreno, said, “It has already been acknowledged that this typhoon is the worst this year, and perhaps the worst natural calamity ever to strike the Philippines.”
