The Provincial Superiors of the Jesuits in Canada, Fathers Jean Marc Biron SJ and Peter Bisson SJ, have cosigned a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They urge the Prime Minister to help ensure the safety of Fr Ismael (Melo) Moreno SJ, who is the director of Radio Progreso and the Jesuit Centre for Reflection, Research and Communication (ERIC) in Honduras. Fr Melo was recently in Canada for a series of meetings in Montreal and Toronto and he spoke powerfully of the situation in his home country, where defenders of human rights and of the environment are frequently threatened and killed.
The Provincial Superiors’ letter urges much more than only Fr Melo’s safety however. It also calls for the safety of all Hondurans who work for human rights and the environment, and it challenges the Prime Minister to make Canadian investors in Honduras more accountable for the well-being of Hondurans and the integrity of their land and resources.
