Fr Lalit P. Tirkey SJ, Director of the Human Life Development and Research Centre (HLDRC), is visiting Canada from 2 November – 10 December 2017. He is visiting 9 cities across Canada and speaking at 6 public events to raise awareness about the importance of Livelihood Support in the Global South, and particularly in his own country, India.
Fr Tirkey’s visit is part of CJI’s Giving Tuesday – Tell Ten campaign to raise awareness about projects that offer economic alternatives for livelihoods in the Global South.
Fr Tirkey has an MA in Natural Resource Management from the University of Manitoba and a PhD in Development Economics from the National Institute of Technology in Silchar, India. He is the author of Can the Garden Be My “Home”? Land, Livelihood, and Life-world of Tea Gardens in North Bengal (Tirkey 2015) and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences. For more, see profile of Fr Tirkey.
The Human Life Development and Research Centre in Darjeeling, India, works with tea estate labourers to access government benefits established by law, provides livelihood training for former tea estate workers and advocates for the rights of marginalized people. HLDRC also undertakes research and has begun to address the problem of human trafficking.
