Visit to Nepal & India
Jesuit Provincial & CJI Director Visit Nepal and India

Fr. Jim Webb and Jenny Cafiso visited a number of schools, parishes, social service centres, agricultural training initiatives and health projects serving the poorest of the poor in both Nepal and India. The seeds for a number of these initiatives were planted by the Canadian Jesuits who went to Darjeeling over 50 years ago and who with the support of many Canadian friends were able to serve those most in need. Most of the initiatives started by the Canadian Jesuits have grown and are now under the direction of local Jesuits. They in turn have started many new projects in education, from primary schools to colleges, parishes and social service centres.

A number of Canadian Jesuits are still active in the region. Fr. Jim and Jenny visited Jesuit Fathers Edgar Burns, Gerard Van Valleghem, Tony Milledge, Carl Krull, Bill Bourke, Murray Abraham, Joe Brennan, as well as Mike Parent who works in Tibet, Bill Robins in Nepal and Henry Nunn in Bangalore. In Nepal F. Jim and Jenny were hosted by Apostolic Prefect Fr. Antu Sharma, a friend of many people in Canada. It was a joy to see them all.

The visit served to strengthen the long standing relationship between the Province of the Jesuits in English Canada and the Darjeeling Province based on a shared faith, vision and commitment to the people who are most in need. Our commitment to mutual support was renewed and strengthened. A positive development is that the Darjeeling Province has a new foreign currency account and CJI is now able to transfer funds to projects thanks to the support and faithful commitment of Canadian donors. CJI has recently sent a letter to all Darjeeling donors giving an update on recent developments. If you would like a copy of the letter, please write to cji@jesuits.ca.
