Emergency Relief in Sri Lanka
CJI Launches Urgent Appeal for Relief and Reconstruction Efforts
Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) urgently needs your support to respond to the needs of the people displaced by the conflict in Sri Lanka. CJI is responding to an appeal made by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) which is active in Sri Lanka providing humanitarian assistance and supporting the resettlement and rebuilding process for internally displaced people currently living in camps. Since January 2009, the role of JRS in the camps of northern Sri Lanka has expanded greatly in response to growing needs. JRS has been providing and distributing cooked food, dry rations, non-food items and attending to the sick in the hospitals at Mannar, Poovarasakulam, Vavuniya and Trincomalee. JRS is also running preschools and supplying the needed uniforms, bags, shoes, exercise books and other students’ stationary items to school age children. Canadian Jesuits International is urgently calling for your support to assist the continuing efforts of JRS in Sri Lanka. According to Human Rights Watch, (www.hrw.org), more than 7,000 civilians have died in Sri Lanka since January 2009 with over 13,000 injured who need medical attention. The United Nations (www.un.org) reports that over 260,000 people are currently in camps in the northern part of the country. The urgent need in these camps is for temporary shelter, food, clean water and basic medical supplies. With your help, Jesuit Refugee Service will continue to provide these and other emergency humanitarian supports for these internally displaced people. In the immediate future, JRS will be working to assist them to return to their land and rebuild their homes as they work towards a just peace for all Sri Lankans. We thank you for your continued support during this crisis and for your generosity in our other international efforts. Please send your donation to:
