Programs Jisu Niketan School and Prabhu Jisu Parish
Matigara, India Fr. Alvin Minj, SJ Jisu Niketan School was started in 1974 by a Canadian Jesuit brother, Robert Mittelholtz SJ, for children who used to roam a railway platform close by. Today, most students are children of stonebreakers who work along the banks of the nearby Balason River. Only very poor children are accepted. There are no school fees or uniforms, but families make a modest contribution of $0.60 CDN per month. In the past year, six teachers taught 204 school children. The parish was established in 1992 to serve the local community of mainly tribal people. Nowadays, there are 510 parishioners including nurses, railway employees, bank employees, customs officials, teachers, government clerks, and forest department officials. A church is under construction. Return to All Programs
