Small Farmer Production & Marketing
Annotto Bay

Fr Jim Webb SJ

With assistance from CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency), the St Mary Rural Development Project supports local farmers to acquire vacant government land, offers agricultural training and has created a cooperative for marketing produce. Sales by member farmers, including women, remained higher than previously despite a drop in the number of members. Farmers attended workshops with agricultural authorities and received subsidized supplies. Thirty additional acres of leased land are being prepared for planting while awaiting final approval to lease 30 more acres. Members of the cooperative participated in educational activities on globalization and agricultural policies through regular discussions and printed articles. The project was used as an example for North American students on the impact of foreign trade practices and World Trade Organization policies on small farmers.
