2015 Winter News

The 2015 winter edition of Mission News of Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) is now available and may be downloaded in PDF format from here.

This issue is on the theme of forcibly displaced persons, both refugees and internally displaced people. CJI supports the work of the Jesuit Refugee Service in a number of the 50 countries where JRS works. In the lead article, the International Director of JRS, Fr Peter Balleis SJ, gives an overview of the global refugee crisis and of JRS’s current assistance to approximately 950,000 individuals worldwide. There are also feature articles on the education of Syrian refugee children in Lebanon and on human rights training of internally displaced persons in Colombia.

Other highlights in this issue (which marks the beginning of the 50th volume of Mission News!) include: a short report on CJI’s support of an Ebola awareness program in Liberia; news of international visitors to Canada, including Fr Kinley Tshering SJ of Darjeeling, India, and Fr Nawras Sammour SJ of Syria; news of partners and supporters in Canada; and a report on a Canadian delegation led by CJI to a “Teach-In for Justice” in Washington, DC. Finally, we mourn the death of long-time CJI worker, volunteer and friend Bob Gaudet, and we welcome Fr David Creamer SJ as a new member of the CJI Board of Trustees.

On the back page there is a special appeal for refugees. If you haven’t yet contributed, please consider doing so by going to our online donation page. Thank you for your generosity!
