Fr Xavier Jeyaraj SJ talks about the alarming transformation of democracy in the world with the election of authoritarian regimes into office. His presentation focuses on India, the world’s largest democracy, with parallels drawn with changes taking place in Latin America, Asia, Africa and North America. Fr Xavier also speaks of how justice, equality, human rights, and “development for all” are being redefined by authoritarian governments all over the world.
While this trend is alarming, we also find hope in the voices heard through public protest demanding alternative models of society. The courage of people, particularly young people, who oppose the democratically elected ‘dictators,’ demanding a JUST FUTURE FOR ALL, can lead to transformative changes for a future built on love, equality and justice.
