On 30 May 2017, the Superior of the Dominican Province of Mexico, Fr Gonzalo Ituarte OP, shared his experiences in Chiapas, Mexico, at a public event in Toronto. Fr Gonzalo was Vicar General for Justice and Peace to the late Bishop Samuel Ruiz of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, and also the co-founder of the diocese’s human rights centre.
Fr Gonzalo spoke about the legacy of Bishop Samuel Ruiz, including the mediation work that Bishop Ruiz led between the Mexican government and the Zapatista movement. He also gave an overview of the Church’s inculturation efforts among the indigenous Maya peoples of Chiapas.
It was a fascinating evening for all who were able to be there. The event was co-sponsored by CJI, the Jesuit Forum, Development and Peace, the Dominican Institute of Toronto, Mary Ward Centre and Kairos.
