Bridging Borders – Tell Ten!

Join CJI’s Tell Ten campaign called BRIDGING BORDERS this fall in the lead-up to Giving Tuesday on November 27!

You can help us “tell ten” about the importance of building bridges between people, countries, faiths and differences — by attending one of our events with a friend, helping to raise $100,000 for our projects, or telling your friends and family about why you support CJI. Below you will find a number of PROJECTS, EVENTS, IDEAS and RESOURCES to help.

To support the projects in CJI’s Bridging Borders – Tell Ten campaign, please

PROJECTS

CJI is promoting 3 projects that help to bridge borders between people:

1. Latin America: Pan-Amazon Caring for Our Common Home Initiative

The people who live in the Amazon River Basin share resources, cultures and land that stretch across established national boundaries.

The Pan-Amazon Initiative works in 26 communities and 5 countries to address cultural and environmental issues jointly among indigenous peoples.

2. Syria: Family Support in Damascus

CJI is supporting Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Damascus, Syria, where educational and psychosocial services are provided to families in the midst of Syria’s ongoing civil war.

The goal of the program is to bridge gaps for the well-being of families and to offer learning support to children with insufficient or no access to schools.

3. India: Lok Manch

Lok Manch (People’s Forum) is a platform for promoting the dignity and well-being of marginalized people in India through policy interventions and improved access to their legal rights.

It builds bridges between people and between organizations and it connects needs with resources.

EVENTS

Three CJI partners will speak about their work of bridging borders at meetings across Canada. Ivette Galván Garcia, a lawyer with the Jesuit Centre for Research and Social Action for Peace in Mexico, will talk about indigenous rights and mobilization for change in Chiapas, Mexico. Fr Nawras Sammour, a Jesuit from Aleppo, Syria, will give an update on the situation in Syria and share what Jesuit Refugee Service is doing among displaced civilians within the country and refugees in neighbouring countries. Fr Mario Serrano, a Jesuit from the Dominican Republic, will speak about the needs of people in the border area of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and share what is being done to empower people there.

Events will be held on the following dates in these cities:

  • Nov 8 – Toronto – Mario Serrano
  • Nov 11 – Winnipeg – Mario Serrano
  • Nov 15 – Ottawa – Ivette Galván
  • Nov 20 – Vancouver – Nawras Sammour
  • Nov 21 – Edmonton – Nawras Sammour
