Br Alphonse McAndrew SJ (82) passed away peacefully on May 18, 2014, at the Ajax-Pickering Hospital. “Al,” as he was called, was born on February 28, 1932, and brought up in Hamilton, Ontario. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1957 and moved to Lusaka, Zambia, in 1972. Br Al served the people of Africa for the next 36 years! He was a skilled carpenter, a gifted mechanic and had abundant energy and faith. When he returned to Canada in 2008, he went on to work with inner-city refugees and migrants in Toronto and also at the apostolate to Native People in Thunder Bay and in Armstrong and Gull Bay. Br Al knew hardship intimately; the “excluded” had a special place in heart.
