On May 1, International Workers’ Day, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) reaffirms its solidarity with workers and groups around the world who fight for better working conditions for all and who struggle to create a just society.
CJI supports projects and initiatives that promote economic justice, human rights and dignity, equality and inclusiveness, social transformation, peace, sustainability, and integrity of creation.
Today, we highlight in particular the work of the Human Life Development and Research Centre (HLDRC), a project of the Jesuit Darjeeling Province. HLDRC accompanies tea plantation workers in North Bengal, India, who are often deprived of their rights and subjected to exploitation by plantations as well as government agencies.
HLDRC supports tea workers through workshops and training that empower community leaders, women, youth and self-help groups; seminars on socio-economic awareness and on legal and women’s issues; alternative livelihood opportunities; training on how to obtain their entitlements, and more.
