Ted Penton, SJ, Provincial Secretary, visited the Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) office in Toronto yesterday for the "annual visitation."The visit gave CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso and staff an opportunity to share information about CJI's work in the areas of international programs, outreach, communications, finance, fundraising, and administration.Fr. Burwell and Fr. Penton engaged with staff, some of whom joined via Zoom, by asking questions about their work and providing feedback. 'Hope is the way"Javier Cortegoso Lobata, Coordinator of the Jesuit Migration Network, delivers a forceful New Year's message on forced migration in the Americas and around the world, the Jesuit response, and prospects for 2025.The network, which provides support to migrants and refugees in Latin America and the Caribbean, is a partner of Canadian Jesuits International.Excerpts: "I am sending you a grateful embrace as we close the year. It has not been a good year for forced migration in the Americas and around the world, and expectations for 2025 are not the brightest. But there are many reasons for hope. I continue to be amazed by God’s presence along the paths and in the communities. I see it in those who walk, those who say goodbye and those who welcome. I see it in lives interrupted by unjust policies, by the threat and all too frequent reality of organized crime, in journeys that grow longer and seem impossible, and in how they persevere, trust and try. Extraordinary stories that leave us deeply humbled by their immense struggles. I find hope in the work of each and every one of you – small miracles that save lives, that transform, that grow weary but never give up a humanity that sets us apart as works of society. The happy faces of the students at St. Peter's Primary School in Gayaganga, India, speak volumes. Thanks to your donations, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) was able to help the Jesuit-run school fix up the corridors and floors of six classrooms, renovate some badly damaged walls, and replace old furniture.These improvements have created a more conducive atmosphere for students and teachers. "The students and staff are extremely grateful to the donors and CJI for their kindness," said a report from Fr Joseph Victor Pitchai, Treasurer and Development Director of the Jesuit Province of Darjeeling. Meet the staff of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Bogota, Colombia. Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) supports their work among displaced people in Barrancabermeja and the Magdalena Medio region. These include Colombians affected by the internal armed conflict, as well as refugees and migrants, mostly Venezuelans. CJI is supporting their project to build capacity, transfer knowledge and promote a culture of hospitality. The project also aims to increase the local integration of women through income generation and community initiatives.JRS-Colombia has been working with displaced people and local host communities in these areas since 1995. Its work focuses on strengthening relationships between displaced and host populations to facilitate the integration of displaced families who are struggling to adapt to their new environment and face the ever-present threat of violence in the area. In recent years, Colombia has also faced the challenge of hosting and integrating 2.8 million forcibly displaced Venezuelans, one million of whom live in precarious conditions.CJI's International Programs Coordinator, Juan Emilio Hernandez (second from right) shared this photo during his recent visit to the JRS office.
