Fr Stan Swamy, an Indian Jesuit priest, was incarcerated for unsubstantiated charges. He has been harassed because of his opposition to government policies that affect the rights of the Adivasis (Indigenous people). His work has included documenting the abuse of power against Indigenous youth and others, falsely imprisoned for defending their rights.
Last April 26, Fr Stan celebrated his 84th birthday in prison. As part of an international advocacy campaign to raise awareness and solidarity for Fr Stan’s situation, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) asked all Jesuits, colleagues, friends and supporters to send a birthday postcard to Fr Stan through the Indian High Commission in Ottawa. It was a way to show the Indian Government that Fr Stan has not been forgotten.
Fr Stan's 84th birthday is over, but we still encourage you to write positive messages of solidarity and support.
