Fe y Alegría helps children in Kikwit and Kinshasa access their right to quality education. Fe y Alegría’s support for a sustainable and equitable education system is an investment in the future of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country of 78 million people, half of whom are below 15 years of age, and whose adult illiteracy rate is 36%.
As part of the Xavier Network, Canadian Jesuits International supports Fe y Alegría as they build capacity of students, teachers, headmasters and parents. The project has already ensured the participation of 1,757 boys and 1,170 girls, in a quality, sustainable and equitable education system. This has been accomplished through cultural activities; reading and writing groups; and training for students who drop out. In addition, training workshops were conducted for 150 parents, 52 teachers and 5 school principals. Through other activities such as a radio literacy program, the project continues to have an impact on access to information and educational materials beyond the schools they serve.
Fe y Alegría is a federation of local organizations that offer educational opportunities to marginalized sectors of society in 19 countries. Fe y Alegría advances the tradition of Jesuit education. The organization started its work in DR Congo at the end of 2014, in regions on the outskirts of Kinshasa and its success has contributed to its expansion to other regions of the county.
In the long-term, Fe y Alegría hopes to address the lack of public investment in education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They will also work for adequate teacher training, stronger community support and inclusion of extra-curricular activities especially for vulnerable communities in rural areas.
