CJI hosted an event called “Transformation through community based healthcare in Mindanao, Philippines” on 19 August 2018 as part of its Open Doors Series, an outreach program that aims to “open doors” on understanding of issues and realities of partners in the Global South. It was held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Toronto and was very well attended – especially given the hot, humid weather!
Two speakers were featured at the event. Sister Petite Lao, RNDM, presented the multi-ethnic, multi-faith history and present-day situation of Mindanao, including its political instability and social needs. Her perspective was informed by her work in community development among the indigenous people of the area.
She was then followed by Dr Ricardo Angeles, PhD, who is a graduate of Ateneo de Zamboanga University – School of Medicine (ADZU–SOM). Dr Ricardo showed slides and described the holistic program at the School of Medicine as well as the good work that its graduates are doing among people in the region.
CJI is a partner of ADZU–SOM. We support a scholarship fund to help promising young medical students as well as an immersion program for these students to gain experience in the rural areas of Mindanao. ADZU–SOM has developed a highly regarded community-based medical curriculum with an emphasis on family and rural medicine. Many of its bright young students would be unable to attend the school without assistance.
