#DYK Your support provides basic literacy and numeracy skills to 2,000 Somali refugee women and girls living in the Dollo Ado refugee camps, in Ethiopia.CJI supports a 24-month Integrated Functional Adult Literacy (IFAL) program being run by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in the camps.The program incorporates knowledge and skills in areas such as parenting/childcare, nutrition, family planning, livelihood, HIV/AIDS, the environment, and basic hygiene practices.Students from the Bokolomayo, Kobe and Melkadida refugee camps have been provided with exercise books and school supplies. #DYK Your support of Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) helps provide quality, intercultural and bilingual education in the Pan-Amazon region. CJI works with the Jesuit Service for the Pan-Amazon Region (SJPAM) and Fe y Alegría (FyA) International Educational Network to provide Indigenous children with an education that inspires them to value their culture and linguistic diversity and to protect their ancestral lands. The education they receive stimulates their curiosity and empowers them. Fe y Alegría and SJPAM work with local communities in five countries - Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. They develop intercultural and bilingual education curricula tailored to the culture and environment of the local communities. Teachers and students need programmes to prevent indigenous languages from disappearing, but they also need Spanish or Portuguese to interact with others as their communities change. Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) staff warmly welcomed Fr. Patrick Etamesor, SJ, Regional Director of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) West Africa, who visited the CJI office in Toronto this afternoon.Fr. Patrick briefed staff on the work of JRS in the region, which focuses on providing education, livelihood and health support to internally displaced persons and refugees in Cameroon, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Chad and the Central African Republic.He highlighted CJI and its donors' support for the construction of classrooms at the Muja High School in the city of Goma, DRC, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 2021. The classrooms were equipped with blackboards, tables for the teachers and desks for the students.Fr. Patrick also spoke about the continued displacement of Cameroonians and Nigerians fleeing attacks on civilians by the armed Islamist group Boko Haram, extreme flooding in once arid areas of the region due to climate change, and other issues.
