Jesuit scholastic from Vietnam spends field placement at CJI

Dang Khoa Tran, also known as Dominic, a Jesuit *scholastic from Vietnam, recently began his seven-week “field placement” (practical experience) at Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) as part of his Master of Divinity program at Regis College, at the University of Toronto.

Dominic has completed three years of philosophical studies at St. Joseph Jesuit Scholasticate in Vietnam, followed by two years of regency in pastoral ministry in the central and northern regions of the country.

Currently a first-year student at Regis, the theological school of the Society of Jesus in Canada, Dominic enjoys reading and “reflective writing on human dignity and spirituality.” Not only do they help him develop his language skills, he said, but the practice also “sharpens my thinking for deeper and more comprehensive engagement with the spiritual, intellectual, and apostolic dimensions of religious life.”

Dominic is particularly interested in studying “interreligious and intercultural dynamics that foster dialogue for the common good.” He is also “drawn to understanding humanistic perspectives.”  which he seeks to integrate with “spirituality, intellectual formation, apostolic experiences, and my own lived experiences.”

He spends his leisure time exploring cultural foundations, historical sites, and “unique expressions of different religious traditions.”

CJI asked Dominic some questions related to his placement at CJI. Excerpts:

What made you decide to apply for a theological placement at CJI?

From learning about CJI’s, vision, mission, and core values, I recognize that human dignity holds a central place in every aspect of its work. It is not only about providing necessities to those in need; it is also about understanding the act of giving as a grace received from God.

[CJI’s work] aligns with what I am studying and seeking to deepen—an approach that requires reflective capacity, spiritual courage, and apostolic commitment, especially as I have more opportunities to delve deeper into Ignatian and Jesuit spirituality. I believe that CJI will offer me new experiences in interreligious, intercultural, apostolic, and interconnected engagement. These experiences call for a genuine commitment to a faith that does justice, balanced with both spiritual and intellectual perspectives. They are essential for my journey of theological reflection and for my ongoing formation in the Jesuit vocation.

What expectations, if any, do you have about the field placement?

My expectations for this placement include engaging more deeply with spiritual documents, especially those rooted in Ignatian and Jesuit spirituality. I hope to participate in designing spiritual programs such as retreats and educational workshops.  I believe that outreach activities will help me better understand organizational approaches and learn how to adapt theological insights within practical, real‑world contexts.

What are you hoping to learn, or what skills are you hoping to acquire at the end of your stint? What skills are you hoping to share with CJI?

I hope to explore and grow in the following areas:   systems of spirituality, especially Ignatian and Jesuit spirituality;  planning, operating, and evaluating programs that integrate both scientific structure and spiritual orientation;  humanistic perspectives within Catholic Social Teaching, Ignatian spirituality, and various theological schools, approached through real-life contexts; social communication skills,  particularly interreligious, intercultural, and collaborative dialogue;  and completing my theological placement with a meaningful orientation that helps me discern my own pastoral ministry in the future.

What skills are you hoping to share with CJI?

I hope to share my experiences with Ignatian and Jesuit spirituality, grounded in what I have learned and practiced; provide spiritual readings and reflections that highlight concrete activities and reveal their deeper spiritual meanings; and participate in outreach initiatives, particularly interreligious and intercultural engagement.

We are deeply grateful to the clergy, staff, and parishioners of Chinese Martyrs Parish, in Markham, Ont. for the warm welcome they extended to Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) during last weekend’s Mission Cooperative Sunday. Thank you to the Rev. Zhijun (Stephen) Lu, pastor; the Rev. Andrew Jianwell Deng, associate pastor; the Rev. John Lizu Gan, associate pastor; and the Rev. Junwei (Michael) Hu, associate pastor.
We also express our thanks to the Archdiocese of Toronto for including CJI in this program, which offers local Catholic communities the opportunity to learn about and support various church-based projects. CJI was able to share information about Jesuit-run projects it supports in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our special thanks to Fr. Robert Wong, SJ, who spoke on behalf of CJI and urged parishioners to support these projects, particularly Jesu Ashram, in India, which provides free medical treatment and care to the poor, especially those living with leprosy and tuberculosis.
Special thanks also to Sabrina Yung-Lau, a long-time CJI donor and volunteer, who kindly assisted Fr. Robert and CJI Outreach Coordinator Juan Camilo Poveda, and Jesuit Scholastic Dang Khoa Tran, who also represented CJI.

Before coming to Canada to study, Gabriel Kofi Akpah, SJ, a Jesuit scholastic from Ghana, taught philosophy at St. Paul’s Major Seminary in Sierra Leone. He also spent several years studying and living in various parts of Africa, including Liberia, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These experiences deepened his appreciation for cultural diversity “and the many ways people seek meaning, hope and community,” he said. They are also helping to inform his “field placement” (practical experience) related to his academic studies at Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) over the summer.

Gabriel is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity, a Bachelor of Theology and a Diploma in Spiritual Direction at Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology, at the University of Toronto. “I’ve always been interested in questions about faith, justice, leadership, and what it means to make the world a better place,” he said.

A big thanks to the Grade 9 teachers, students, and student leaders at Toronto’s Loretto College High School for welcoming Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) this morning. CJI Outreach Coordinator Juan Camilo Poveda, along with Jesuit scholastic Dang Khoa (Dominic) Tran, Hasina Qadari, and Jas Sidhu gave a presentation on CJI’s fall 2025 campaign, Women at the Heart of Justice. The campaign highlighted women as essential changemakers in the global struggle for dignity, equality, and sustainability. It focused on the critical role women play in addressing issues such as gender-based violence, economic exclusion, and environmental injustices. It also highlighted CJI programs that empower women.
We were inspired by the engagement demonstrated by the students and educators at Loretto College High School, who were eager to learn about how empowering women is essential to build just, inclusive and sustainable communities around the world.

During their recent trip to Chile, CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso and International Programs Coordinator Juan Emilio Hernandez traveled to Tirúa to visit the Jesuit community living among Indigenous people in the Mapuche territory.

They received a warm welcome from Fr. Carlos Bresciani, SJ, a Jesuit priest and coordinator of the Network for Solidarity and Indigenous Apostolate (RSAI), a CJI partner organization. Fr. Carlos has lived and worked with Indigenous people in the territory for nearly 23 years.

Jenny and Juan also met Fr. Polo, another Jesuit priest, who works as a medical doctor in the community.

Jenny described the earlier meetings with delegates of the social apostolates of the Conference of Jesuit Provincials of America, and the visit to Tirúa as “life-giving.”
