On World Environment Day, June 5, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) reaffirms its commitment to ecological justice and joins the urgent call for world leaders to accelerate climate action. #WorldEnvironmentDay 2026 focuses on climate change and calls on everyone “to step in #NowForClimate.” With your support, CJI works with the Jesuit Service for the Pan-Amazon Region (SJPAM) and the Fe y Alegría (FyA) International Educational Network to educate people about ecological and social justice issues and to promote intercultural and bilingual education in the Amazon region. Fe y Alegría and SJPAM are working with local communities in seven countries – Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela – to help them protect their traditional cultures and to deal with the environmental damage caused by the exploitation of natural resources. Through mutual exchange and collaboration, they identify and implement actions to protect their natural resources and build a culture of solidarity, awareness and care for "our common home.” This includes training educators through specialized diplomas and multi-lingual self-guided courses on integral ecology, knowledge sharing, and global advocacy involving educators, students, and communities. Pope Francis popularized integral ecology in Laudato Si', asserting that "the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor' are one and the same. Tackling ecological damage also means tackling social injustice. Fe y Alegria believes that in the face of ecological crisis, “schools can become engines of change, transformative action and hope.” It also notes that the climate crisis is a threat to education, citing a UNICEF study that “about 1 billion children live in countries most at risk of the impacts of climate change.”

CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso (fourth from left) and staff bade farewell to Fr. Ismael Matambura, SJ, Executive Director of the African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN) who finished his visit to Ontario yesterday. They thanked Fr. Matambura for raising awareness about the work of AJAN, a CJI partner, and about the HIV situation in Africa. During his visit, he met with CJI supporters and students in Toronto, Guelph and Parkhill.
