Canadian Jesuits International staff greatly appreciated meeting Fr Arturo Sosa SJ before a Mass at Regis College in Toronto on 29 May. Fr Sosa was on his first visit to Canada since his election as the Superior General of the Society of Jesus in 2016. In his homily, Fr Sosa stressed the importance of reconciliation in our work.
Fr Arturo Sosa is the 31st Superior General of the Jesuits and the first to come from Latin America. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1966 and was ordained priest in 1977. Fr Sosa earned a PhD in political science and taught at universities for many years. He also served as Coordinator of the Jesuit Social Apostolate and Provincial Superior in Venezuela. More recently, Fr Sosa worked at the Jesuit Curia in Rome, where he was Delegate for the inter-provincial houses and works of the Society of Jesus.
Fr Arturo Sosa was interviewed in Canada for the program Witness by Fr Thomas Rosica CSB, director of Salt and Light TV. You can view this interview, courtesy of Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation, below:
On his first official visit to Canada, from 18 – 30 May 2018, Fr Sosa met with the provincial superiors of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States. Other highlights of his visit included attending the ordination of Jesuit priests and deacons in Toronto and Quebec City, a visit to Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, visits to several schools and colleges in Regina, Toronto and Montreal, and visits to other apostolates in both English and French Canada – all of which will be united under the new Jesuit Province of Canada this year on the feast of St Ignatius, July 31.
