Y4O Day in Hamilton

On Wednesday, 7 November 2018, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) will host a “Youth for Others (Y4O) – Social Justice Day” in Hamilton, Ontario. It will be held at Mount Mary Retreat Centre in Ancaster (just outside Hamilton).

For more information, please see the poster below or click here. You can also contact Pieter Niemeyer at CJI: 1-800-448-2148 or pniemeyer@jesuits.org.

About 80 students from several Catholic high schools in the Niagara, Hamilton and Halton Regions are expected to participate. They will be exploring how to be “youth for others” — inspired by the former Jesuit Superior General, Fr Pedro Arrupe, who called on us to be “men and women for others.”

The keynote speaker for the day is Fr Mario Serrano, a Jesuit priest from the Dominican Republic and currently the social justice coordinator for the Jesuit Conference of Latin America. Fr Mario has done extensive social justice work with the border communities of Dajabon, Dominican Republic, and Ouanaminthe, Haiti. He will speak on ways to bridge borders, not just physical borders but also borders between people.

During the Y4O Day, Jesuit and lay presenters will lead workshops on topics ranging from health and education, peace and conflict, refugees and migrants, and human rights. They will share their personal experiences from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and talk about the inseparable link between faith and justice.

"Indigenous peoples have been guardians of the forest for millennia despite their worldviews and cultures not being recognized and valued. They maintain the Amazon as a true "vital organ" of the planet. It is a source of ancient wisdom and care for humanity and Earth. It is a cradle for social and ecological justice. "

Easter is an invitation to each of us to “walk in newness of life.” Let us look to Jesus to show us the way. Jesus’s first Easter morning appearance was to women, even though He knew they would not be believed.Hayden Hall is an apostolate founded by a Canadian Jesuit in Darjeeling, India. The Jesuits and lay people who work there lead the way to a new life for vulnerable women. They work with poor daily wage labourers from the tea gardens, some of whom are victims of domestic violence. They help women know their rights and gain financial independence through education, skills training and income generation projects. They accompany women as they walk in newness of life.#Easter #nopoverty #equalityforall #genderequality
