On May 1, International Workers’ Day, Canadian Jesuits International reaffirms its solidarity with workers and organizations around the world who advocate for just working conditions.
Projects supported by CJI in Africa, Asia, and Latin American America include Jesuit initiatives that promote the human rights and dignity of workers. In North Bengal, India, the Human Life Research and Development Centre (HLDRC) accompanies workers in tea plantation estates who are denied their rights.
Plantation managers often do not provide workers with statutory benefits specified in India’s Plantation Labour Act, including just wages, medical services and primary education benefits for workers’ children.
HLDRC, a project of the Jesuit Darjeeling Province, offers workshops and training to tea workers on how to obtain their legal rights, and seminars on women’s issues, alternative livelihood opportunities, and socio-economic issues.
