CJI supports formal and informal education projects that include distance learning, workshops and practical training. CJI also continues to promote and advocate for access to quality healthcare for all through partners who provide free medical care and facilitate health and medical training.

On International Literacy Day, September 8, and International Day to Protect Education from Attack, September 9, Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) reaffirms its commitment to support education as a human right for all.

CJI supports formal and informal education projects initiated by its Jesuit partners in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Among them is a a Fe y Alegría project to ensure access to quality and inclusive preschool education for the most vulnerable children in the rural areas of Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Madagascar, and Haiti.

The project aims to improve the cognitive, physical and socio-emotional development of vulnerable children ages four to six. It hopes to accomplish this by implementing a participatory education model.

Rather than operating in isolation, the schools will actively integrate families and local leaders into their daily operations to ensure that education is accessible, valued, and sustained at the local level.

Access to education in these countries are often hindered by many factors such as gender, disability, ethnicity, Indigenous status, poverty, displacement. In Haiti, approximately two out of ten children aged six and eleven do not attend primary school, according to UNICEF.

Judith Keegan lived a life defined not by what she accumulated, but by what she gave away.

While she never considered herself wealthy, she possessed a richness of spirit and faith that touched countless lives around the world. She faithfully supported CJI for more than 30 years, as its mission resonated deeply with her values and her desire to help those facing hardship and injustice.

Our Jesuit partners in Nepal have launched various relief efforts to help those affected by the devastating flash floods.

In the first photo sent by the Darjeeling-Nepal Province, Fr. Armit Rai, SJ, of the Nepal Jesuit Society (third from left) leads the delivery of relief goods to victims of the flash floods.

“The people of Nepal have already suffered from the devastating effects of previous earthquakes and from chronic poverty and instability. I have assured the Jesuit provincial and Fe y Alegria of our support as they respond to this new emergency," said Canadian Jesuits International Executive Director Jenny Cafiso.

Last Friday, as our time with our summer interns and volunteers came to an end, we celebrated and expressed our gratitude for their generous contributions of time, talents, and friendship.

Thank you, Hasina, Kofi and Dominic!

Everyone had a great time, except Kofi, who was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.

We, at Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), encourage our friends and supporters to join us in praying for those affected by the devastating flash floods that killed more than 360 people on the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26.

According to Fr. Shajumon Chakkalakkal, SJ, Provincial of the Darjeeling-Nepal Province, among those who have been deeply affected by the deluge include teachers and students in Jesuit schools in the area. CJI has partnered with several Jesuit institutions in Nepal since the first Canadian Jesuits went there several decades ago.

“We are deeply concerned about two of our Jesuits in Tipling, a remote part of Nepal. They are totally cut off. We cannot reach them. Roads and bridges have been washed out,” said Fr. Shajumon in an email to CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso.

The Jesuits are safe, but lack food, electricity and internet connectivity, and it is not possible to reach them or for them to leave the area. “Many who had gone to work in the neighbouring district are missing or dead. They tell me all the shops are empty of supplies. If connectivity is not established, many will starve.”

During a meeting with young Catholics from the Archdiocese of Genoa (Arcidiocesi di Genova) Pope Leo XIV urged them not to be “couch potatoes,” saying the Church “needs your holy rebelliousness, your pure energy, and your desire to transform situations of suffering into spaces of hope.”

By encouraging them to be a driving force in the Church, he offered a compelling vision for youth engagement, writes Dang Khoa Tran, a Jesuit scholastic from Vietnam. He spent a seven-week “field placement” (practical experience) at Canadian Jesuits International as part of his Master of Divinity program at Regis College, at the University of Toronto.
