The global Commission on the Role and Responsibilities of Women in the Society of Jesus, established by Father General Arturo Sosa in March 2021 to assess and recommend ways to increase the participation of women in Jesuit institutions and in the priorities of the Society of Jesus, is expected to submit its report this year.
Nearly 30 years ago, Jesuit General Congregation 34 issued Decree 14: Jesuits and the Situation of Women in Church and Civil Society, emphasizing the importance of women in the life and ministry of the Society of Jesus and in the Church and advocating their active role and representation in Jesuit apostolates and leadership.
The commission was asked to evaluate the impact of Decree 14, assess the participation of women in Jesuit institutions, promote dialogue and collaboration, and recommend structural changes to promote greater inclusion and solidarity.
The commission reviewed a global survey with insights from 1,400 respondents across Jesuit organizations on the role of women in Jesuit institutions. The survey gathered views on women's roles in the Society of Jesus and in Jesuit-led institutions, and recommendations to improve women's involvement. It sought recommendations on gender equality, key gender issues, and actions needed to implement Decree 14.
The Jesuits Global website reported that the commission engaged in "attentive listening," carefully considering the experiences and perceptions of women, men, women religious, and Jesuits across six Jesuit conferences.
The commission is made up of nine women, two laymen and five Jesuits from various Jesuit provinces worldwide.
