Members of the Canadian Jesuit International Board of Trustees met on Saturday to discuss progress on the new strategic plan, approval of new international programs, updating the by-laws, ongoing staff work, and other matters. They also met with Fr. Jeffrey Burwell, SJ, Provincial of the Jesuits of Canada, who was in Toronto for the meetings. Fr. Jeffrey is one of three members of the CJI Board of Directors, which is responsible for managing the affairs of the corporation.

When a group of rural women in El Salvador could not get loans from mainstream banks, they decided to invest in themselves.They took what little money they had and formed a savings and credit group. With the support of Solidaridad CVX, the local social centre that is part of the Comparte network, the women received training and were able to form a cooperative to produce chicken feed.The women also received gender-transformative learning as part of the training. "We could see how they value themselves, they are empowered and self-sufficient," noted Juan Emilio Hernandez, coordinator of international programs for Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), who visited the women's cooperative with CJI Executive Director Jenny Cafiso and members of Comparte.Comparte is a network of the Conference of the Jesuit Provincials of Latin America and the Caribbean (CPAL) that includes 16 different social justice organizations in 11 countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Spain. Juan Lopez, who served as a city councilman in Tocoa, was an outspoken critic of mining and thermoelectric projects in Honduras. Fr. William Bourke, SJ, died November 29, 2019, in Gayaganga, India, at 94, "yet continues to live with the people of God in memories and deeds."Fr. Bourke volunteered to go to Darjeeling India in 1955 where he began a long and fruitful career as a teacher, writer and administrator. He became fluent in Nepali, Hindi, and Bengali.
