Two Jesuit organizations in Honduras, Radio Progreso and ERIC (Reflection, Investigation and Communications Team), accompany the people of Honduras and provide education to strengthen human rights and promote economic, social and political alternatives for the well-being of marginalized communities.
These activities take place in the context of widespread poverty, inequality and corruption in Honduras, where journalists and human rights and environmental activists face violent opposition and frequent death threats for their work. In recent years, a number of journalists and activists have been murdered, including several from Radio Progreso.
Its latest project, Communities in Motion: Territory, Cultural Identity, and social Justice, aims to contribute to the institutional strengthening of the social apostolate that supports community initiatives in the fight for justice and social equality in Honduras.
Accompanying Community Actions in the Struggle for Justice and Social Equity, aims to continue efforts that contribute to the kind of social change that ERIC and Radio Progreso advocate. Specifically, it works to strengthen the capacity and solidarity of several groups in Honduras. These include the Network of Journalists, the Network of Community Radio Stations, and a number of grassroots, Garifuna, and indigenous organizations. The project will support community partners in their advocacy on issues such as defense of territories, natural resources, human rights, and food sovereignty.
