Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) stands in solidarity with those seeking safety and dignity. #DYK CJI supports a project by Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Venezuela that addresses the ongoing migration crisis affecting millions of Venezuelans. 🇻🇪 More than 7.7 million people—20% of Venezuela’s population—have left the country since 2014 due to a severe economic and political crisis. This is Latin America’s largest exodus in recent history and one of the world’s most pressing displacement crises, according to the UN. The JRS Venezuela project: 🔹 Raises awareness of the risks of migration and the need for protection 🔹 Promotes reconciliation and addressing xenophobia between migrants and host communities 🔹 Provides food aid to teachers in Zulia, Táchira, and the Capital District to reduce absenteeism caused by food insecurity 🔹 Hosts workshops on informed, safe migration and community-building Many migrants face unimaginable dangers on their journey, especially through the perilous Darién Gap, where they are vulnerable to violence, trafficking, and other threats. Funds raised will go to local Jesuit partners in Myanmar who are providing food, water, shelter, hygiene and sanitation, medical supplies and psychosocial support to those most affected by the earthquake. With buildings and homes flattened — in some towns up to 80% of structures have been completely destroyed — the situation is catastrophic. This disaster comes at a time when Myanmar is already suffering, with more than 3.5 million people displaced due to political violence, economic collapse and recent flooding. The earthquake has only added to the pain and hardship the people of Myanmar are enduring. Friends and supporters in India and around the world continue to campaign for Fr. Stan Swamy's name to be cleared so that his legacy as a human rights defender will be more prominent than the false charges against him. Fr. Stan, a Jesuit priest and activist who spent five decades fighting for Indigenous rights in the state of Jharkhand, died in 2021 after enduring seven months of unjust imprisonment on trumped up charges of terrorism. CJI is currently participating in an international campaign with other Jesuit organizations around the world in honour of what would have been Fr. Stan’s 88th birthday on April 26. #DYK When you support Canadian Jesuits International (CJI), you are helping to provide quality education to the children of tea workers and the Rajbanshi tribe in Nepal's Jhapa district? The Jesuit-run Moran Memorial School, a CJI partner, supports underprivileged children who would otherwise not have access to education. Your donation helps fund scholarships, teachers' salaries, and school expenses such as building maintenance, equipment upgrades, utilities, and extracurricular activities. Despite many challenges - such as living in harsh conditions and learning in Nepali and English, languages they do not speak - these students are enthusiastic about their studies and determined to succeed. The lives of tea estate workers in eastern Nepal are difficult. They live in overcrowded housing with inadequate sanitation, often lacking electricity, clothing and adequate food. With wages as low as $3.77 for a full day of backbreaking labor, many cannot afford necessities, let alone school fees and other expenses. At Moran Memorial School, a full year of education for a student costs approximately $300. Most families can only contribute the equivalent of one day's wages each month. Your generosity helps bridge the gap and ensure these children receive the education they need to break out of the cycle of poverty and isolation.
