Ecological justice for a shared future

“[A] true ecological approach… must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”  Pope Francis, Laudato si’: 49

Ecological justice acknowledges that environmental and social issues are inextricably linked. Neither can be solved without addressing the other.

Based on the principle that everyone has an equal right to a healthy environment, ecological justice means that all living things, including people and nature, must be treated fairly and with respect.  Among other things, it advocates economic growth that does not harm nature and people, especially the poor who are already suffering the most from ecological damage. A personal message and more

A word from Jenny Cafiso, CJI Executive Director

There is an image on page 6 of this newsletter which struck me deeply. For me, it summarizes the problem with the state of the world today and why we need ecological justice. In the image, you can see children and their teacher in a classroom in the Philippines, carrying out their lesson with their feet deep in water. They seem oblivious to the flooding, and the perils of stagnant water. The image also speaks volumes about the determination of the students and their families and the commitment of the teachers to education no matter what. Continue reading
